Project description
This internship aims to develop a practical room-temperature RF characterization and qualification methodology for quantum control and readout electronics, using the requirements of superconducting-qubit measurements as the basis for defining relevant tests. Qubit measurements are outside the scope of the internship. If you are a student interested in contributing to this effort, we offer an example project as a starting point.
Example project description
The project will investigate representative RF electronics platforms and compare different signal-generation and acquisition architectures.
The work will progress from understanding the underlying hardware architecture and RF signal paths to identifying the RF signal-performance characteristics relevant to quantum control and readout and developing standardized measurement methods. The intern will then experimentally characterize selected instruments at room temperature and use the results to evaluate the strengths, limitations, and trade-offs of the different architectures.
Your profile
We are looking for a motivated MSc student in applied physics, RF/microwave engineering, quantum engineering, or a similar field. Familiarity with the following would be valuable:
- Basic understanding of RF and microwave engineering, including concepts such as DACs, ADCs, mixers, modulation, noise, SNR, harmonics, etc.
- Experience with, or interest in, RF measurement equipment such as spectrum analyzers, Arbitrary Waveform Generators (AWGs), VNAs, oscilloscopes, signal generators, etc.
- Programming experience, preferably in Python, for measurement automation and data analysis.
- An interest in quantum computing and superconducting-qubit measurement technology.
- A practical and analytical mindset with an interest in understanding hardware and performing laboratory measurements.
- Ability to work independently, document results clearly, and translate experimental observations into engineering conclusions.
- Prior hands-on experience with quantum hardware would be nice but not strictly required; a strong interest in RF electronics, measurement engineering, and quantum technology is more important.
