QuTech receives OrangeQS Rack for QuKiT project

Last week, OrangeQS delivered an OrangeQS Rack to TU Delft as part of the QuKiT project funded by the European Innovation Council. The rack will be used by the research groups of Dr. Srijit Goswami and Dr. Christian Andersen at QuTech, a research institute within TU Delft. The room-temperature control stack was specifically designed to test a novel hybrid qubit, the Kitmon. The Kitmon is a new type of qubit currently under development based on a hybrid between superconductors and semiconductors, and is engineered to be immune to most decoherence mechanisms, through topological protection.

One of the biggest challenges in quantum computing is the short coherence time of qubits, which limits error correction and practical applications. The QuKiT project aims to overcome this by developing a new type of qubit that combines the strengths of superconductors and semiconductors – the Kitmon.

By encoding quantum information in a topologically protected system, in this case a Kitaev chain, researchers from QuTech aim to create qubits that are highly resistant to decoherence. Embedding this system in a Transmon architecture allows them to leverage proven superconducting qubit control techniques, achieving high gate fidelities and long coherence times.

The project, funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC) through the EIC Pathfinder instrument, was kicked off in November 2023. The consortium members are QuTech, IOM Materials Foundry at the Italian National Research Council (CNR), Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), Energiatudomanyi Kutatokozpont (EK), Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and University of Augsburg.

The OrangeQS delivery team successfully delivered and tested the OrangeQS Rack, in collaboration with the Andersen Lab and the Goswami Lab. A Site Acceptance Test of the OrangeQS Rack was performed, demonstrating the hardware and connectivity of the room-temperature control stack to the excited students and researchers.

Within the project, OrangeQS will also develop custom software modules for the testing of Kitmon qubits. Having the OrangeQS Rack in place, allows for straight-forward deployment of newly developed measurement software in the future.
